Sneeuwgors - Plectrophenax nivalis nivalis - ingevuld maar blijkbaar staat de nominaat (talrijkste ondersoort) niet in de lijst en komt er 'onbekend' te staan;

gedetermineerd als eerste-winter op basis van de puntige staartpennen;

bij het zien van de eerste foto's deed de vogel me denken aan Siberische Sneeuwgors (P n vlasowae) - zoals bijvoorbeeld beschreven in Martin Garners winterboekje voor Varanger - en dat was de reden waarom ik bij overslaande golven de pier af ben gaan fietsen; de zichtbaarheid van tekening op stuit en rug bleek echter sterk met de mate van zonlicht te variëren dus moeilijk te beoordelen

A very white-backed individual indeed. Although there are several claims of vlasowae in northern Norway the taxon is not on the Norwegian List.

@Geir: Didn't know that vlasowae isn't on the Norwegian list. Perhaps Martin never submitted his Varanger birds to the Norwegian committee or, more likely, the committee decided not to consider this clinal subspecies.

Perhaps you need a decision by a taxonomic committee (like CSNA in the Netherlands) about this subspecies' validity.

I agree with Martin that birds with characters of vlasowae must turn up in western Europe as vlasowae is considered to be the subspecies breeding as far west as the European part of arctic Russia (Archangelsk Oblast).

The taxon vlasowae (acknowledged by IOC) was previously on the Norwegian List, but not anymore. Specimens from Finnmark in 1928 and Nordland in 1968 were subsequently reviewed and found not proven.

As reasons for a non-acceptance the Norwegian rare birds committee stated that the nominate can include extreme individuals that cannot be excluded, furthermore that there are no indications of Siberian birds spreading to northern Norway, it is thus likely that these birds (and others in northwestern Europe) are individuals from the northern European population (n. nivalis) with characters of vlasowae.
