Rare Birds in The Netherlands in 2010

This is the 31st annual report on rare birds in the Netherlands to be published in Dutch Birding. This report comprises records from 2010 as well as belated and reconsidered records, dating back to 1977, which have been evaluated by the Dutch rarities committee, the Commissie Dwaalgasten Nederlandse Avifauna (CDNA). Several 2010 reports are still under review or awaiting submission and could therefore not be included. In addition, some reports for 2009 and earlier years are still under consideration for various reasons. The increase in entering records online on internet portals like www.waarneming.nl produces many new details of past records. In this report, therefore, date extensions are presented, for the sake of completeness.
Details included for each record are, if available: date(s); location and/or municipality (municipal divisions as on 1 January 2010); province; number of birds if more than one, plumage and sex; type of record if trapped, photographed, sound-recorded, videoed or found dead (and where specimen is stored); names of up to three observers involved in finding, identifying and recording, and relevant references in the literature, which normally include (inter)national but not regional journals, and published photographs. Records from 2009 lasting into 2010 that already have been published in the 2009 report (Ovaa et al 2010) are repeated here without reference, for the sake of completeness.
Observations not (yet) submitted but mentioned in the 2009 report are not repeated in this report. The sequence of the records in the species accounts is from the current year backwards, with records within one year presented chronologically. A compilation of most rarities videoed can be found in Plomp (2011). Numbers after each (sub)species' name refer to the total number of individuals 1 from 1 January 1800 to 31 December 1979, 2 since 1 January 1980 but excluding 3 the current year. Taxa marked with an asterisk * are new to the Dutch list.

On the Dutch Birding website, information is shown of either recently accepted records or rejected reports as well as records and reports currently under review.
Decisions regarding taxonomy have been delegated to the Dutch committee for avian systematics (Commissie Systematiek Nederlandse Avifauna; CSNA), which on 1 January 2010 consisted of the following members: Arnoud B van den Berg, André J van Loon, C S (Kees) Roselaar and George Sangster (secretary).
In 2010, at least 367 species were recorded, which is well above the average of 362 species a year for the last 10 years. The number may rise to 370 or more depending on the acceptance of several pending reports (ie, Semipalmated Sandpiper Calidris pusilla, Greater Short-toed Lark Calandrella brachydactyla, Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans and Arctic Redpoll Carduelis hornemanni). Two were new to the Dutch list: Grey-tailed Tattler Tringa brevipes and Northern Waterthrush Parkesia noveboracensis. The Oriental Turtle Dove Streptopelia orientalis from 23 December 2009 to 3 April 2010 was also a new species but this bird was found in 2009. With these three additions, the Dutch list now numbers 501 species (including Cabot's Tern Sterna acuflavida, which was upgraded to species level; Redactie Dutch Birding 2011). Other highlights for 2010 included the second Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria, third Demoiselle Crane Grus virgo and Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus, fourth Greater Yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca, fifth Pygmy Cormorant Phalacrocorax pygmeus and Black-winged Kite Elanus caeruleus, seventh Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus and Daurian Shrike Lanius isabellinus, and ninth White-tailed Lapwing Vanellus leucurus and Eurasian Scops Owl Otus scops. In addition, 2010 was a good year for Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris, Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus and River Warbler Locustella fluviatilis with each three records, Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus, Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites ruficollis, Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus, Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus, Desert Wheatear Oenanthe deserti and Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola with four, and Thrush Nightingale Luscinia luscinia with five.

These birds are considered to be the same individuals seen earlier during the winter of 2009/10, having split from the group of four which stayed on Texel, Noord-Holland, from 28 September 2009 onwards (Ovaa et al 2010). Not all reports in 2010 have (yet) been submitted and, therefore, observers are asked to submit additional information to complete our understanding about the movements of these birds.

The individual at Woerden is considered a returning bird, already accepted for the winter of 2007/08 (Ovaa et al 2009). The returning bird at Wieringermeer was first accepted for 26 December 2003 to 2 March 2004 (van der Vliet et al 2006).

There were at least two widely roaming individuals which were staying most of the time with a group of c 20 Ruddy Ducks O jamaicensis near Leidschendam. These individuals were the first since 2007 and the first twitchable since 2003. All previous records were between 7 November and 6 April.

The adult male on Texel is considered the same individual as the one c 20 km north at Slufter, Texel, on 10 May 2009 (cf Ovaa et al 2010). Both times, it was actively displaying to female Common Eiders Somateria mollissima. The record from 2005 concerns a date extension of a bird previously accepted for 6-11 April 2005 (van der Vliet et al 2006).

During a cold spell in January, the Barendrecht bird (staying for its seventh consecutive winter) was present at Dordtsche Biesbosch, c 15 km from its usual but frozen site of Gaatkensplas. The 2005 bird had already been accepted (van der Vliet et al 2007) but has been reconsidered and is now accepted as a different individual, based on comparison of photographs.

This is a date extension of a returning bird first seen in January 1992 and previously accepted until 22 December 1996 (van den Berg & Bosman 2001, Berlijn 2007). The bird was absent in the winter of 1995/96 and present again from 16 November 1996 (cf van der Vliet et al 2000, contra Berlijn 2007).

The reports for 1997, 1999 and 2007 concern date extensions of birds previously accepted for 15 February to 15 March 1997 (Wiegant et al 1999), 3 January 1999 (van der Vliet et al 2000) and 23-27 October 2007 (Ovaa et al 2008), respectively. The male in the winter of 2000/01 is considered to be a returning bird first present from 9 February to 9 March 2000 (van der Vliet et al 2001).

This Nearctic duck is most commonly found during spring: in April (10), May (10) and June (4).

The bird seen at sea at Doggersbank was found from a vessel during a seabird survey and was the first since 2005. The 1995/96 record concerns a date extension of a bird previously accepted for 30 December 1995 to 20 January 1996 (Wiegant et al 1997).

There have been two birds in 1999 (January and June), one in May 2000 and one in March 2003. The one in 2010 stayed in a rather large and difficult-to-survey area of freshwater lakes surrounded by trees and could, therefore, be very elusive. Sometimes, it was not seen for many hours or even days despite extensive searching.

This species has been seen between 12 April and 30 October but more than half of all birds have been found in June.

This is a date extension of a bird previously accepted for 25-30 April 1995 (van den Berg & Bosman 2001). This species is no longer considered since 1 January 2000 but the CDNA still welcomes reports from before this date.
Black-winged Kite / Grijze Wouw

Two very lucky observers saw and photographed this bird while it passed their back garden in a southerly direction. There are four previous records: on 31 May 1971, on 29-31 March 1998, from 4 June to 23 August 2000, and on 22 May 2009.

It was decided to treat both sightings as two records although the distance between both was c 15-20 km, so it could easily have concerned the same individual.

A well-watched juvenile in October at Petten, Noord-Holland (Dutch Birding 32: 427, plate 602, 2010), is still in circulation. Before 1999, only eight have been accepted and more than half were from the last five years. The CDNA welcomes all reports not yet submitted to document the increase of records in recent years.
Long-legged Buzzard / Arendbuizerd

This bird was found and photographed by a tourist in a holiday cottage park, resting on the chimney of one of the buildings. The photographs came to light days later, when the bird was no longer present. The possibility of Atlas Long-legged Buzzard B r cirtensis was considered, mainly because of the rather fine-looking bill, but the committee decided that the taxon involved could not be determined with certainty.
Demoiselle Crane / Jufferkraanvogel

This immature was first seen in Zuid-Holland at 13:35, flying south-west along the coast at Meijendel, and during the next hour it passed three other migration watchpoints, flying past the last near Oostvoorne at 14:24. From the photographs, it was obvious that it did not wear any rings and that it was fully winged, so the CDNA decided that this individual could be of wild origin. The first was at Strabrechtse Heide and Groote Peel, Noord-Brabant, in four out of five spring periods in 1991-95; the second stayed near Buurse, Overijssel, on 15-26 August 2000.
Great Bustard / Grote Trap

The species has been considered by CDNA since 1986 and this was the first since 1997 - thanks to an early winter cold spell and heavy snow cover - and unexpectedly without any ring or wing clip from re-introduction projects. Careful comparison of the photographs left no doubt that all sightings involved a single individual, which covered a distance of c 120 km within 24 h. From 27 December to 4 March 2011, the same bird stayed intermittently near Denderbelle, Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium (Dutch Birding 33: 139, plate 145-146, 2011).

The 1993 record concerns a date extension of a bird first present from 4 June to 4 October 1992 and again in 1993, when it was accepted only for 19 July previously (van den Berg & Bosman 2001). The 2004 record concerns a date extension of a bird previously accepted for 8-19 May 2004 (van der Vliet et al 2005). This species is no longer considered since 1 January 2009 but the CDNA still welcomes reports from before this date.
American Golden Plover / Amerikaanse Goudplevier

Unusually, both birds were at inland sites. Plumage details showed that they concerned different individuals. Many birders associate Nearctic waders with late summer or autumn. However, the month in which this species has been found most is May, with 10 individuals, while in October, only six were found.

The bird in October 2008 was submitted as American Golden Plover P dominica and the one in November 2008 as Pacific Golden Plover P fulva. In both cases, the CDNA could not decide on the specific identity because neither photographs nor description excluded one of the two taxa.

The bird was photographed by a single observer in late morning on concrete blocks of a pier 1 km off the North Sea beach. The photographs were sent a few hours later by e-mail to CDNA member Roy Slaterus, who identified the bird almost immediately. Despite extensive searching by many people during the same and the following day, it could not be found again. This was only the fourth record for Europe, with previous ones in Wales (1981), Scotland (1994) and Sweden (2003).

This individual was identified retrospectively. The finder expected it to be an Arctic Jaeger S parasiticus, made a description and took measurements of the corpse, because he thought an inland find of that species was interesting. More than 30 years later, re-identification was possible because of this description in his old notebook. This species is no longer considered since 1 January 1993 but the CDNA still welcomes reports from before this date.

The CDNA decided that the birds at Westkapelle and on Texel concerned the same individuals. From Westkapelle, the birds flew north within minutes after they were discovered at c 12:30. Seven hours later, they were found on Texel, 200 km north of Westkapelle, where they stayed until 20:30 (Brenkman 2010).

The adult (with yellow ring with inscription C83K on its left leg) had been ringed as a pullus near Mustasaari, Finland, on 21 July 1996. The fourth calendar-year (with black ring with white inscription J781 on its left leg) had been ringed as a pullus in Somna, Nordland, Norway, on 27 July 2006. Only birds ringed at a nest in a 'pure' Baltic Gull colony are currently considered acceptable but this may change when the CDNA decides to follow the recommendations by Altenburg et al (2011), who argue that unringed second calendar-year individuals meeting a strict set of criteria based on plumage and moult are safely identifiable in the field.

The bird was first identified on 21 January, when it was feeding amongst Eurasian Collared Doves S decaocto in a backyard in the village of Wergea. Subsequently, it attracted 100s of birders. Later, photographs and observations became known which showed that it had already been present since 23 December 2009. There are no records of the eastern nominate subspecies, Oriental Turtle Dove S o orientalis.

The three males, assumed to be returning birds from 2009, all remained unpaired. Interestingly, based on detailed analyses of sonagrams by members of the Werkgroep Ruigpootuilen (Working group for Boreal Owls), the birds moved their territories during spring, even over considerable distances (c 10 km). More detailed information about the sites is not given to minimize the risk of disturbance.

Birds ringed at Castricum, Noord-Holland, on 9 July and 1 October (Dutch Birding 32: 355, plate 495, 436, plate 622, 2010) are still in circulation. The bird at Scherpenissepolder was the fourth in spring and the fifth to be found in the field. It was very difficult to observe but the sound recordings made it possible to clinch the identification. Reports of possibly this bird the following days could, however, not be accepted due to lack of documentation.

This bird stayed in a quarry in the extreme south-east and was seen daily by a steady stream totalling c 1000 birders. It could be quite elusive for hours but was more reliable during the early morning or late afternoon, flying out of or into its roosting cave. This was the second record; the first concerned a female wintering on high buildings in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, in the winters of 1989/90 and 1990/91.

The bird on Ameland was the first in autumn and most likely the same bird that stayed on Fanø, Denmark, on 12 October. The bird in 1977 is, in retrospect, the second and the only one in June. All other spring records are from April-May.

The circulation of the 2009 record took a while to establish the identification of females as well as the total number of birds involved. After checking as many photographs as possible, four different males and six females were accepted. The Eemshaven location (harbour area) in combination with the flock size provoked discussion about possible ship-assisted arrival. However, there was no direct proof linking the birds to any ship that arrived at or passed the Eemshaven. The female at IJmuiden created a real identification challenge for the observers. Fortunately, the bird was frequently calling and the analysis of the recordings unambiguously proved it to be a Spanish Sparrow.

With four records each, 2009 and 2010 are both record years for this species. The species, which is still spreading west in Finland and Germany, was first recorded in August-September 1984. In 1990-99 (11) and 2000-09 (12), a total of 23 individuals was found. Almost 30% of all birds were recorded in 2009-10.

This was proclaimed as the 500th species for the Dutch avifaunal list. It concerned (only) the species' 14th record for Europe and the WP, with previous ones in England (six), France (three), Ireland (two), Channel Islands (one) and on a ship near the Azores (one, followed by one on Corvo in October 2010). During its four-day stay, it was visited by more than 500 birders. Vlieland is getting known as the Netherlands' American songbird trap as it was also the island where three Red-eyed Vireos Vireo olivaceus, the first Baltimore Oriole Icterus galbula and a Myrtle Warbler Setophaga coronata were found.

Most records were rejected because the identification was not fully established (often due to lack of documentation) or when the bird showed signs of captivity, such as dubious rings, excessive wear and/or aberrant behaviour. Species for which the CDNA unanimously decided that all records up to and including 2010 refer to birds of captive origin are indicated with *. This included records of birds of which all ancestors are assumed to be of captive origin (introduced species of British category C).
