In zuid-Spanje overwinteren ze in kleine aantallen. We zagen 2-3 exx.

In 2015 en 2016 zijn in totaal 15 juveniele Spaanse vogels uitgerust met een GPS-GSM tracker. Wat blijkt: 7 daarvan doken op in Noord-Afrika, en een enkeling zuidelijk tot ver in Mauritanië (2400 km van de broedplaats).

The paper commented by G. Sangster is really interesting. There is the possibility that in the near future Spanish Imperial Eagle breeds again in North Africa, perhaps in Morocco, where it was a breeding species in the northwestern part of the country at least during the last years of XIX century and the beginning of XX c.; see this reference:
